India’s transition toward a green economy is expected to create significant employment opportunities and new business models, according to Union Minister Jitendra Singh. Speaking at an environmental conference at Jamia Millia Islamia on April 23, the minister highlighted how renewable energy, electric mobility, and circular economy practices are driving a structural shift in India’s development model.

He stated that green jobs and green entrepreneurship will play a central role in economic growth. Sectors such as solar manufacturing, battery production, and biofuels are projected to generate large-scale employment, particularly for young professionals.

Green Transition Drives Employment Growth

India’s clean energy push is aligned with its broader strategy for sustainable and low-carbon development. Government-backed initiatives like the National Green Hydrogen Mission, with an allocation of over ₹19,000 crore, aim to support industrial decarbonization and energy security.

The minister noted that emerging technologies are accelerating change across sectors such as steel and cement. These developments are expected to enhance efficiency while reducing carbon emissions. Grassroots innovations, including the conversion of conventional vehicles into electric ones, were also cited as examples of scalable solutions.

Expanding Scope of Green Entrepreneurship

The circular economy is emerging as a key area for entrepreneurship. Initiatives such as converting used cooking oil into biofuel are creating new business opportunities. In addition, untapped resources like ocean energy are being explored to complement solar and wind energy systems.

The government has also introduced a ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development, and Innovation Fund to support startups and innovators. This initiative aims to strengthen collaboration between public and private sectors and accelerate technology-driven growth.

Youth at the Center of Sustainable Growth

With a population of over 1.4 billion, India’s role in global climate action remains significant. The minister emphasized that youth participation will be critical in shaping future sustainability efforts. He encouraged students and researchers to engage in innovation and adopt environmentally responsible practices.
