The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has invited member states to express interest in hosting World Environment Day in 2028 or 2029. The deadline for applications is Jan. 15, 2027. The selected countries will have an opportunity to present their environmental priorities to a global audience through one of the world's largest environmental awareness campaigns.
In an announcement dated Oct. 5, 2026, UNEP said host countries would organize and finance events within their territories. They would also contribute to the international outreach campaign. UNEP would support global media engagement, digital promotion, environmental storytelling and participation by senior officials.
World Environment Day Campaign Reaches Millions Worldwide
Observed annually on June 5 since 1973, World Environment Day brings together governments, businesses, civil society groups and communities to highlight environmental challenges and solutions.
UNEP reported that its 2026 campaign generated 180 million video views and 239 million social media impressions. The 2025 campaign generated more than 56,000 media stories and 5.2 million website visits, according to the agency.
These figures indicate the campaign's digital and media reach. However, audience engagement figures alone do not measure changes in environmental conditions or the long-term impact of individual initiatives.
What Previous Host Countries Achieved
Azerbaijan hosted World Environment Day in 2026, while the Republic of Korea hosted the 2025 observance in Jeju.
According to the Korean government's account, official events in Jeju attracted more than 10,000 participants and high-level delegations from 19 countries. A ministerial roundtable addressed international cooperation to end plastic pollution. The event also featured an initiative focused on the circular economy.
Azerbaijan's environment minister, Rashad Ismayilov, said the 2026 observance helped present the country's environmental priorities and initiatives internationally.
How Countries Can Apply For 2028 Or 2029
UNEP has asked interested member states to review the application requirements and host-country responsibilities before submitting an expression of interest.
Completed application forms must be sent to Daniel Cooney, UNEP communication director, at daniel.cooney@un.org by Jan. 15, 2027.
The selection will determine which country hosts the global observance in 2028 or 2029. The event is expected to provide a platform for environmental cooperation, public engagement and the presentation of national initiatives.
