Europe has introduced a new digital resource to help governments, businesses and local authorities prepare for climate change. The European Environment Agency (EEA) launched its Navigator of Climate Resilience Tools alongside the European Commission’s new Climate Resilience Framework. The initiative aims to make trusted information and practical adaptation resources easier to access across Europe.
The launch comes as European countries face interconnected risks from heatwaves, floods and droughts. These hazards can affect public health, infrastructure, agriculture and economic activity. The EEA says climate risks cross national borders and require coordinated action at European, national and local levels.
New Digital Platform Supports Climate Adaptation Planning
Available through the European climate adaptation platform, Climate-ADAPT, the Navigator brings together digital tools for different stages of climate adaptation. These include risk assessment, adaptation planning, implementation and progress monitoring.
Users can search for resources by sector, climate hazard, region and specific adaptation needs. The EEA says its experts reviewed the listed tools with support from Eionet, its network of member and cooperating countries.
The platform is intended to help public authorities, planners and businesses identify suitable resources. However, the effectiveness of adaptation measures will depend on how institutions apply the information and address local risks.
EU Climate Resilience Framework Targets Coordinated Action
The European Commission’s framework provides an integrated approach to climate resilience and risk management. It is intended to help European Union member states prevent, assess and prepare for the growing effects of climate change.
The EEA will contribute scientific knowledge, environmental data and practical resources. The approach reflects the need to consider climate risks across borders and policy sectors.
EUCRA-2 To Examine Interconnected Climate Risks
The EEA has also published an interim methodology report for the second European Climate Risk Assessment, known as EUCRA-2. The assessment is being designed around user needs and stakeholder cooperation.
Its planned approach will examine interconnected risks, barriers to adaptation and factors that can support effective responses. It will also identify potential policy measures to improve preparedness.
The EEA says the Navigator will evolve as scientific evidence, datasets and climate projections change. Together with the European Climate Viewer and Mission Solutions Explorer, it will support access to climate information and adaptation resources. These initiatives provide planning support, while governments and other users remain responsible for implementing appropriate measures.
