A one-tonne export of GI-tagged Tezpur litchi from Assam to Dubai has marked a new step in India's efforts to expand agricultural exports from the North Eastern Region. The shipment, facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), was dispatched on June 7 and announced by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on June 9.
Tezpur litchi, known for its bright-red skin, sweetness and distinctive aroma, is among Assam's most recognized horticultural products. The fruit received Geographical Indication (GI) status, a certification that links a product's quality and reputation to its place of origin. Industry observers say GI recognition has become an important tool for improving market visibility and export competitiveness.
GI-Tagged Produce Gains International Market Access
The consignment was exported to Dubai, one of the Gulf region's major food import hubs. Officials said the shipment demonstrates growing international demand for premium Indian agricultural products and highlights the export potential of the North East.
The export included varieties such as Bombaya, Bilati, Elaichi, Piyaji and Sahi. APEDA said the initiative was carried out in collaboration with state authorities, exporters and local stakeholders to connect farmers with overseas buyers.
According to officials, growers participating in the export supply chain received nearly 10% higher prices than prevailing domestic market rates. The development is expected to encourage more farmers to engage in export-oriented production and value chains.
North East Emerges As A Focus Area For Agricultural Exports
India has increased efforts in recent years to diversify agricultural exports beyond traditional products. APEDA has supported this strategy through quality certification, infrastructure development, market linkages and training programs.
The North Eastern Region is home to several high-value agricultural products, including fruits, spices and organic crops. Policymakers view exports as a way to improve farmer incomes while creating new economic opportunities in rural areas.
What The Export Means For Assam Farmers
While the shipment volume was relatively small, trade experts note that pilot exports often serve as market-entry exercises. Successful deliveries can help establish supply chains, test consumer demand and build confidence among international buyers.
The Tezpur litchi export also reflects a broader trend of promoting region-specific products in global markets. If demand remains strong, larger shipments could follow during future harvest seasons.
For Assam's litchi growers, the export provides access to premium markets and demonstrates how geographical branding can support agricultural value addition. For India's export sector, it offers another example of how specialty farm products are finding opportunities beyond domestic markets.
