Senior officials from BRICS countries met in New Delhi on Aug. 17 to discuss environmental priorities, climate change and sustainable development as India leads the grouping in 2026.
The meeting was held at Bharat Mandapam ahead of the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting scheduled for Aug. 18.
Four Priorities Shape BRICS Environment Agenda
India said the Environment Working Group and the Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development have focused on four priority areas.
These include sustainable lifestyles, afforestation and forest fire management, disaster resilience, circular economy and climate adaptation.
The agenda connects environmental protection with resource efficiency, climate resilience and sustainable development. India’s BRICS 2026 chairship theme is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said member countries have held 21 virtual thematic and negotiation meetings, 10 bilateral consultations, two thematic dialogues and two technical webinars during India’s chairship.

Expanded BRICS Membership Broadens Climate Agenda
The meeting included representatives from Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates, along with India.
The expanded BRICS membership brings together countries with different economic structures, environmental conditions and development priorities. Cooperation on climate adaptation, sustainable development and resource efficiency is therefore a major part of the group’s environmental discussions.
Ministers Set To Consider Next Steps
The senior officials’ meeting was aimed at building consensus on key environmental priorities for consideration by ministers.
The 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting is scheduled to take place in New Delhi on Aug. 18. Discussions are expected to cover climate resilience, ecosystem restoration, circular economy practices, sustainable lifestyles and adaptation.
The meeting reflects the broader role of BRICS in discussions on environmental and sustainable development issues. Further implementation will depend on decisions taken by member countries and relevant institutions.
