India may witness an early arrival of the southwest monsoon in 2026, according to fresh projections from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. The development comes as large parts of the country continue to experience intense heat, with temperatures in several northern and central regions crossing 43°C.
The India Meteorological Department has also warned of persistent high temperatures in the coming days, increasing the significance of an early monsoon onset for relief and agricultural planning.
Forecast Points To Early Onset Over Southern Regions
Weather models indicate that the monsoon could first reach the Andaman and Nicobar Islands between May 18 and May 25. This is earlier than the typical timeline. Strong southwest winds over the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea are expected to bring above-normal rainfall to the region during this period.
Following this, the system is likely to advance toward the southwest coast of India. Rainfall activity could intensify over Kerala and parts of Tamil Nadu between May 25 and June 1. Meteorological data suggests rainfall levels may exceed seasonal averages, supported by strengthening westerly winds over the Arabian Sea.
Key Climate Drivers Behind Monsoon Timing
Experts highlight several climatic factors influencing the monsoon’s progress. The absence of El Niño conditions is considered favorable for timely or early rainfall. Additionally, a positive phase of the Indian Ocean Dipole could enhance moisture flow toward the Indian subcontinent.
High pre-monsoon temperatures across India may also accelerate the movement of moisture-laden winds from surrounding seas, contributing to earlier rainfall activity.
Heatwave Conditions Increase Dependence On Timely Rains
Large parts of India are currently facing severe heat conditions, increasing reliance on the monsoon for cooling and water resources. Early rainfall could support agricultural cycles, especially in southern regions dependent on seasonal precipitation.
While forecasts indicate a likely early onset, meteorological agencies note that monsoon progression depends on evolving oceanic and atmospheric conditions over the coming weeks.
