India has crossed a major milestone in its rooftop solar expansion, with more than 50.06 lakh households installing rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The achievement comes just over two years after the scheme was launched, marking one of the fastest expansions of residential rooftop solar deployment globally.

The government said the programme has added significantly more rooftop solar installations in two years than were recorded during the previous decade. The scheme has a total financial outlay of ₹75,021 crore and aims to increase household access to clean electricity while reducing dependence on conventional power sources.

Rooftop Solar Installations Gather Pace Across India

Official data show that installation rates have accelerated sharply in recent months. Daily installations increased from about 5,038 systems in October 2025 to nearly 16,328 systems in July 2026, representing a more than threefold rise. During July 2026 alone, 5.06 lakh households installed rooftop solar systems, the highest monthly figure since the programme began.

The government has released ₹28,024 crore in subsidies through the Direct Benefit Transfer system. Officials said around 19 lakh households now report zero electricity bills, while more than 12 lakh households earned a combined ₹421 crore during FY 2024-25 by exporting surplus electricity to the grid.
