India and the US have expanded discussions on civil nuclear cooperation, with a focus on private investment, clean energy technology, and advanced nuclear projects. The talks took place in New Delhi during a meeting between Jitendra Singh and a high-level US industry delegation representing the Nuclear Energy Institute and the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum.
The discussions centered on India’s Nuclear Energy Mission and recent policy reforms that aim to increase private sector participation in the country’s nuclear industry. Officials from India’s Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Science and Technology also joined the meeting.
India Targets Major Nuclear Expansion By 2047
India plans to increase its nuclear power generation capacity from 8.8 gigawatts to 100 gigawatts by 2047. The expansion is part of the country’s long-term clean energy and industrial growth strategy under the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
According to government officials, the recently introduced SHANTI Act 2025 is expected to create new opportunities for foreign investment, manufacturing partnerships, and technology cooperation in the nuclear sector. The law is designed to support greater industry participation while strengthening India’s energy infrastructure.
The meeting also highlighted India’s plans to develop Small Modular Reactors, or SMRs. The government has allocated nearly ₹20,000 crore for SMR-related development and research activities.
Advanced Technology And Energy Cooperation In Focus
India and the US reviewed progress on several ongoing projects, including the proposed Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear project at Kovvada. Discussions also covered hydrogen production, artificial intelligence applications in nuclear safety, scientific computing, and rare earth collaboration.
Officials further reviewed progress on the LIGO-India scientific research project, which is being developed in partnership with US institutions and supported by a budget allocation of ₹2,600 crore.
Both sides said the talks reflected a shared interest in expanding cooperation in clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and emerging technologies.
