India’s health authorities have issued a nationwide public health advisory as several regions continue to experience intense heatwave conditions during the summer season. The advisory was released by the Ayush Vertical under the Directorate General of Health Services in coordination with the Ministry of Ayush and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The advisory outlines preventive measures to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses and urges citizens to remain cautious during periods of extreme heat. Officials advised people to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, and wear light cotton clothing to reduce heat exposure.
Vulnerable Groups Face Higher Heatwave Risks
According to the advisory, infants, children, elderly people, pregnant women, outdoor workers, and individuals with chronic illnesses such as hypertension and heart disease are at greater risk during heatwave conditions. Authorities recommended close monitoring and additional precautions for these groups.
The advisory also called for preventive arrangements at workplaces, sports events, and public gatherings. Employers and organizers have been advised to provide shaded rest areas, regular water breaks, and awareness programs on symptoms linked to heat stress.
Health officials warned that symptoms such as dizziness, headache, nausea, dehydration, fainting, seizures, and high body temperature may indicate serious heat-related illness. Heatstroke has been identified as a medical emergency requiring immediate medical attention through emergency helplines 108 or 102.

The Ministry of Ayush included traditional wellness recommendations from Ayurveda, Siddha, Yoga, Unani, and Homoeopathy systems. Suggested measures include consumption of cooling drinks such as coconut water, buttermilk, and lemon-based beverages.
The advisory also recommended seasonal foods including cucumber, watermelon, musk melon, ash gourd, lime, and tomatoes to help maintain hydration during extreme heat conditions.
Yoga breathing exercises such as Sheetali Pranayama and gentle yoga practices were also suggested to support thermal comfort and stress reduction during high temperatures.
Citizens have been advised to follow regular weather updates issued by the India Meteorological Department and take precautions during heatwave alerts.
