Air quality enforcement agencies across India's National Capital Region (NCR) reported 87 environmental violations during a 19-day inspection drive, highlighting ongoing challenges in controlling industrial emissions, construction dust and diesel generator use.
The latest review by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) examined enforcement activities conducted between May 11 and May 29, 2026. The findings were discussed during the 132nd meeting of the Enforcement Task Force on June 5.
Hundreds Of Inspections Lead To Enforcement Actions
According to CAQM, Flying Squad teams carried out 245 inspections across NCR during the reporting period. These included 31 inspections at construction and demolition (C&D) sites, 74 inspections in industrial units and 140 inspections related to diesel generator (DG) sets.
The inspections identified 87 violations. Authorities reported 21 violations at C&D sites, 25 in industrial facilities and 41 linked to DG set operations.
Based on the findings, officials proposed the closure of 11 units or projects, sealing of 33 DG sets, issuance of 19 compliance directions and environmental compensation penalties in 13 cases.
Road Dust And Urban Pollution Remain Key Concerns
The task force also reviewed road dust mitigation efforts, a major contributor to particulate pollution across NCR. Inspections conducted by the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority covered nine locations and reported 37 violations. Notices were issued for repeated failures related to dust control, cleaning and sweeping operations.
Separately, inspections by the Municipal Corporation Ghaziabad found 24 violations across four areas. A show-cause notice was issued over recurring compliance gaps.
Compliance Improves, But Monitoring Continues
CAQM said all actionable cases reviewed during its previous meeting had been addressed. Authorities issued 18 resumption orders after verifying compliance, including 13 for industrial units and five for construction sites.
Cumulative data reviewed by the commission showed that 27,378 entities have been inspected since enforcement operations began. Authorities have issued 1,788 closure directions, while 1,401 units have received permission to resume operations after meeting environmental requirements.
The commission emphasized stronger coordination among agencies, faster compliance verification and stricter enforcement across industrial facilities, construction sites, diesel generator operations and road dust management initiatives to support long-term air pollution reduction across NCR.
