The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has strongly condemned an attack on the tanker MT Settebello off the coast of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz, raising fresh concerns over maritime security in one of the world’s most critical shipping corridors.
The vessel, sailing under the flag of Palau, reportedly came under a projectile strike, resulting in a fire on board. Three seafarers are currently reported missing, according to the IMO statement issued on June 10, 2026.
Seafarer Safety And Shipping Disruption Concerns
IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez said the organisation “strongly condemns any act” that endangers the lives of seafarers and the safety of international shipping. He said the protection of civilian shipping and crew members remains a shared international responsibility and must remain a priority under international law.
The IMO called for a full and transparent investigation into the incident. The organisation also reiterated concerns about repeated attacks in the region affecting maritime operations and global trade routes.
Rising Incidents In Strategic Shipping Lane
According to IMO data, there have been 43 verified attacks on international shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz since 28 February 2026, resulting in 11 confirmed seafarer deaths.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key transit point for global oil and cargo shipments. Repeated incidents in the area have increased attention on maritime security, freedom of navigation, and risks to commercial shipping.
The IMO continues to monitor the situation closely as investigations into the latest attack remain ongoing.
