India Weather Alert: Heavy Rain Across Regions As Monsoon Intensifies, Bay Of Bengal System Looms

India’s monsoon is set to remain active across several regions this week, with the India Meteorological Department warning of intense rainfall in parts of central and northern India and a fresh weather system likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal.
The IMD said a low-pressure area over north Madhya Pradesh and nearby areas is influencing weather conditions. It forecast isolated extremely heavy rainfall over East Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh on Aug. 10.
A separate low-pressure area is likely to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal and nearby areas around Aug. 12. The system is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to Odisha between Aug. 12 and Aug. 14.
The forecast covers a wide area, with rainfall expected across northern, central, eastern, northeastern, western and southern parts of the country during the week.
Central India And Rajasthan Face Extreme Rainfall Risk
West Madhya Pradesh recorded extremely heavy rainfall during the 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. IST on Aug. 10. Shyampur in Sehore district received 21 cm of rain, according to the IMD.
Mohgaon in Mandla, East Madhya Pradesh, recorded 19 cm. Hatibharkala in Uttarakhand received 12 cm, while Mahroni in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, recorded 11 cm.
The IMD forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places in West Madhya Pradesh and East Rajasthan, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall on Aug. 10.
The agency warned that intense rainfall could cause waterlogging, localised flooding, inundation of low-lying areas and landslides. Road and rail movement may also be affected in vulnerable locations.
The IMD’s 24-hour flash-flood outlook identified a low to moderate risk over parts of East Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh. It also identified several watersheds in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand as areas of concern.
Bay Of Bengal System Brings New Rainfall Focus
An upper-air cyclonic circulation is currently located over the northwest Bay of Bengal and surrounding areas. The IMD expects a low-pressure area to form around Aug. 12.
Under its influence, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast over Odisha from Aug. 12 to Aug. 14. Heavy rainfall is also forecast at different times across Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar.
Northeastern states will also see periods of widespread rainfall. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya are expected to receive heavy rainfall during parts of the week. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are forecast to receive rainfall from Aug. 10 to Aug. 16.
The Western Himalayan region is another focus area. Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is forecast across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand through Aug. 16.
Delhi, Western And Southern India Also On Watch
Delhi-NCR is expected to remain generally cloudy through Aug. 13. Light rain is forecast on several days, with moderate rain possible at some places on Aug. 10 and Aug. 11.
Maximum temperatures in Delhi are expected to remain between 33°C and 36°C. Minimum temperatures are forecast to range from 23°C to 28°C during the period.
Western India will also remain active. Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is forecast over Konkan and Goa through Aug. 16. Gujarat is expected to receive widespread rainfall from Aug. 10 to Aug. 13, with isolated heavy rainfall possible in parts of the region.
In southern India, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is forecast over Coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe and Lakshadweep through Aug. 16. Thunderstorms, gusty winds and strong surface winds are possible in several areas.
The IMD has also issued marine warnings for parts of the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal through Aug. 15. Fishermen have been advised to follow official warnings before entering affected sea areas.
The weather agency has advised residents in vulnerable locations to monitor official forecasts during periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms. It has also recommended proper drainage in agricultural fields to reduce waterlogging.
The IMD cautions that forecast accuracy decreases as the forecast lead period increases. Conditions may therefore change as the weather systems develop.
