The Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) marked its 15th Foundation Day on Sept. 21, highlighting its expanding role in India’s renewable energy sector. The government-run renewable energy agency said more than 41 gigawatts (GW) of renewable generation capacity has been commissioned through third-party developers during its 15-year journey.
Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power Shripad Yesso Naik said SECI would continue to play a central role in India’s clean energy plans. The remarks were made at a stakeholders’ meeting in New Delhi.
SECI Reports Growth In Renewable Energy Deals
According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), SECI has signed power sale agreements covering more than 67 GW with distribution companies, or DISCOMs, and consumers. The corporation said these activities have enabled about ₹3.6 lakh crore in cumulative market investment.
SECI was incorporated on Sept. 20, 2011. It initially served as an implementing agency for the National Solar Mission. Its mandate has since expanded across several renewable energy technologies and related markets.
India’s broader renewable energy capacity has also increased sharply. MNRE data shows total renewable energy capacity, including large hydropower, reached about 295.55 GW as of Aug. 31, 2026. Solar capacity stood at about 168.04 GW.
Green Hydrogen And Distributed Energy Gain Focus
The Foundation Day event included discussions on green hydrogen, distributed renewable energy and emerging energy markets.
One session examined green hydrogen and other green molecules for industries where reducing emissions can be difficult. Discussions covered production, infrastructure, technology, financing and potential industrial applications.
Another session focused on distributed renewable energy. Participants discussed consumer participation, distributed energy resources and emerging market mechanisms.
Storage And New Energy Markets
SECI said it is expanding its activities in energy storage, green hydrogen and related areas. Managing Director Akash Tripathi said the corporation would work with stakeholders and respond to changing market requirements.
The developments come as India expands renewable generation while addressing grid integration, storage and new forms of energy demand.
