President of India on Sept. 20 called for greater community participation in climate adaptation. She said traditional knowledge and local practices can help strengthen resilience to environmental and climate risks.

President Droupadi Murmu made the remarks at the valedictory session of the international conference on “The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics” in New Delhi. The National Green Tribunal organised the conference.

She said climate change is linked to biodiversity loss, water stress and land degradation. It also affects food security, health and livelihoods.

President Highlights Role Of Local Communities

President Murmu said climate policies should include communities that face the direct effects of climate change. She highlighted the needs of rural and forest-dwelling communities, small farmers, women and other vulnerable groups.

She said traditional knowledge and the experience of local communities can support climate adaptation. She called for people-centred and community-based approaches to building climate resilience.

The President also said developing countries need to strengthen resilience while maintaining economic and social development. Climate action, she said, should consider development needs, economic priorities and technical feasibility.

Sustainable Afforestation Goes Beyond Tree Planting

President Murmu said sustainable afforestation can contribute to climate resilience. She stressed that the objective should extend beyond planting trees.

She said afforestation should support biodiversity and reflect local environmental conditions. The broader goal should be the restoration of healthy and self-sustaining ecosystems.

Mission LiFE And Climate Resilience

President Murmu also highlighted the Government of India’s Mission LiFE initiative. The programme promotes environmentally responsible behaviour and greater public participation in sustainability efforts.

She said India has made efforts to increase environmental awareness, particularly among young people.

The conference brought together experts, judges, jurists and stakeholders from different countries. Discussions focused on environmental law, climate change, adaptation and measures to build climate-resilient societies.

President Murmu expressed confidence that the conference’s discussions and action plans would contribute to inclusive environmental policies and effective climate action.
