On International Sun Day, India highlighted its growing clean energy capacity as the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) organized the “Run for Sun” marathon on May 3, 2026. The event was held at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, with participation from citizens across multiple age groups, reflecting increased public engagement in renewable energy initiatives.
Rooftop Solar Installations Hit Monthly Record
The event marked a key milestone under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. Official data shows that 2.7 lakh rooftop solar installations were completed in April 2026, the highest monthly figure recorded under the scheme.
In total, the program has facilitated 30 lakh rooftop installations, benefiting more than 45 lakh households across India. The initiative focuses on expanding access to solar energy and reducing reliance on conventional electricity sources.
India Solar Capacity Reaches 150 Gigawatts
India’s cumulative solar energy capacity has reached 150 gigawatts as of March 31, 2026, according to government data. This marks a rise from 2.82 gigawatts in 2014, indicating a 53-fold increase over 12 years.
Nearly 50 gigawatts were added in the past 15 months, representing the fastest capacity expansion recorded. Around 50 percent of India’s installed electricity capacity now comes from non-fossil fuel sources, achieving the 2030 target ahead of schedule.
Marathon Promotes Public Awareness On Clean Energy
The “Run for Sun” marathon included 2 km and 5 km races aimed at increasing awareness of renewable energy adoption. Officials stated that public participation plays a role in supporting long-term sustainability goals.
India is currently ranked third globally in installed renewable energy capacity. Authorities indicated that continued focus on rooftop solar expansion and infrastructure development will remain central to the country’s energy strategy.
