Delhi Families Could Get Free Solar Panels: Check Your Eligibility?

Delhi households could soon get rooftop solar systems without paying the installation cost upfront under the revised Delhi Solar Energy Policy. The Delhi government has set a target to install solar systems on about 2.3 lakh residential rooftops and add 500 megawatts of rooftop capacity by March 2027.
The scheme is aimed at households with an average monthly consumption of up to 400 units. Installation will depend on technical feasibility and other conditions under the revised policy.
The government says the new approach is intended to reduce the upfront financial burden that has prevented some households from installing rooftop solar systems.
Who Can Get Free Solar Panels?
Eligible households can have rooftop solar systems of up to 3 kilowatts at zero upfront cost, according to the Delhi government.
The central government subsidy under the PM Surya Ghar scheme is ₹30,000 per kilowatt for the first 2 kilowatts and ₹18,000 for the additional capacity up to 3 kilowatts. The maximum central subsidy for a residential system is ₹78,000.
Delhi's existing solar policy also provides a state subsidy. The official Delhi Solar Portal currently lists a state capital subsidy of ₹10,000 per kilowatt, capped at ₹30,000 for a 3-kilowatt residential system.
The revised arrangement announced by the government includes additional financial support to bridge the gap between available subsidies and the installation cost.

What Could Happen To Electricity Bills?
Solar panels can generate electricity for household use during daylight hours. Surplus electricity can be exported to the power grid under applicable net-metering arrangements.
The Delhi government has said households using up to 200 units a month will continue to receive the existing electricity subsidy after installing rooftop solar systems.
The Delhi Solar Energy Policy also provides generation-based incentives for residential rooftop systems. The official portal lists an incentive of ₹3 per kilowatt-hour for residential systems up to 3 kilowatts.
The actual savings will depend on electricity consumption, solar generation, rooftop conditions and the applicable billing arrangement.
Five Years Of Free Maintenance
The revised plan also provides for free operation and maintenance of systems installed under the scheme for five years through selected vendors.
The government has set a target of completing 2.3 lakh residential rooftop installations by March 2027. The broader Delhi Solar Energy Policy aims to expand rooftop solar capacity and increase the use of renewable electricity across the capital.
