India’s Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has called for a coordinated national approach to sustainable development, placing strong emphasis on community participation and traditional knowledge systems. His remarks were delivered during an interaction with representatives of local governance bodies in Nainital, Uttarakhand, according to an official government release.
Community Participation Key To Climate Action
Om Birla said that addressing climate change requires active involvement from citizens, Panchayati Raj Institutions, Urban Local Bodies, and Van Panchayats. He stressed that grassroots participation is essential for both climate mitigation and adaptation efforts. He also highlighted the importance of environmentally sustainable lifestyles, aligning with broader global climate goals.
He described local institutions as critical to India’s democratic framework. According to Om Birla, these bodies contribute significantly to environmental governance and resource management at the ground level.
Uttarakhand’s Van Panchayat Model Draws Focus
Om Birla pointed to Uttarakhand’s Van Panchayats as an effective model of community-led forest management. He noted that these institutions support forest conservation, biodiversity protection, and rural livelihoods. The model has been functioning for decades and continues to evolve through policy support and local engagement.
He also underlined the interconnected role of water, forests, and land in maintaining ecological balance. Conservation of these resources, he said, is a shared responsibility requiring collective action.
Indigenous Knowledge And Local Experience Recognized
The Speaker emphasized the value of indigenous knowledge systems, particularly in areas like forest fire management and sustainable resource use. He noted that local communities possess practical experience that can complement scientific approaches.
Om Birla also called for a structured plan to promote medicinal plants, including research and integration with healthcare systems. He highlighted Uttarakhand’s role as a center for traditional practices such as yoga and Ayurveda.
During the event, local representatives raised issues related to forest management, funding, and institutional capacity. Om Birla stated that these concerns would be considered at the national level.
